Assignment #4: City Knowledge

This afternoon, as I was reading through your posts, one of them caught my eye. LupeFiasco wrote "If there's a low average (on the Chicago knowledge test) it's because people don't know their city like they should."

1. Is it important for you to know about your city? Why or why not? You're no tourist, so why does it matter?

2. Whose responsibility is it to make sure you are educated about your city? Is it the job of schools? Parents? Individuals? By what age should people know about where they live? Be sure to explain what you think what you do.

Remember the rubric rules!

  1. 1. I think that it's important to know about your city because if tourrist come to our city and they ask us a question about Chiacgo we're going to have to tell them and we dont want to to sound dumb when we dont know anything about our own city.
    2. I think it's our own resposibility to know about our city. If I want to know about my city then I would do watever it takes to learn about my city.

  2. 1. Yes it is important to know about your city because you never know when your kids or someone you meet is going to ask you a question about our city.
    2. I think it is your job to know all this because after you come out of school nobody is going to keep you on your a game.

  3. 1.I think it kind of is important to know about your city, because sometimes you need to know about the history of your city and what has happened in the past.
2.I think it's the schools responsibility to make sure that the students of the school are getting taught what they need to know. People should know about where they live when they are probably in like elementary school.

  6. 1.In my opinion I do think it is important to know about your city. If you don't how would you know how to get around? If you take public transportation how would you know what are the most safest ways to walk home at night? If you don't know about your city, then you really don't live in it.
2.If you can go to school and get educated. Then you can go out on your own and educate yourself. Its like being in a class, your learning something new each day. Its not really up to the schools to teach you about the city you live in. Sure, they might pass through it, but its up to you to go out and find out answers on your own. To me, that's what makes you smarter and a better learner.

  7. Patti- Brilliant response. I think it is one of those things that you should be learning on your own but schools can certainly get you started. Wow, I also love the point about public transportation.

How many of you take the El?

  10. El stands for Elevated. The train was teh first in the United States that was raised above the city instead of under the ground, or on the ground.

  11. Well its not exactly the most important thing to know about your city. Its always great to have some background knowledge on everything surrounding you though. If you think about it what happened in the past is going to stay there but it may affect you later but the way I see it its only the way you let things affect you. If you choose to take things the way they are you'll be fine. As far as who's responsibility it is to educate you on your city, it all comes down to you. You may be able to look for guidence from others but it all gos to how much you want it. If you look for people to show you things you'll end up having a lot of disapointments

  13. 1.I think that it is important to know were you live, but tourist take pictures of landmarks of Chicago, such as the sears tower, or the "Willis tower". to me it doesn't matter as long as I know how Chicago came to be and that i lived here long enough to know how it's changing.
    2. The responsibility to know or be educated about Chicago is you. I think its the school job to educate students on how Chicago came to be so they more information beside modern technology is changing.I think the age you should be educated about Chicago should be around the age of 9. I say this because the earlier you learn were you come from the better.

  14. 1.I think that it is important to know about your city. People who live in the city should know most of the details about their home town. Tourist know more because they do more research on the city.

2.I believe that it is everyones job on our knowledge about the city. When I say everyone I mean all the people around us like our parents and friends. The age that everyone should know most of the city's history is around 13 years old. This is all I have to say on city knowledge.
