Assignment #8: Would You Rather...

There is a game that I like to play with my brothers called "Would you rather." The idea behind the game is that you pick two things that are both pretty awful and then everyone must decide which they would rather do. (Example: Would you rather sit in detention for 30 hours straight copying the handbook or have to walk across hot coals?)

So, here's one for you. We talked about the labor problems at the time. People worked endless hours and could barely afford to live. Living conditions were awful and cramped but they were all people had. Pullman built a city for his workers with larger housing and what he considered to be better living conditions. Sounds great? The catch was that he controlled how they lived their lives.

Would you rather work in terrible conditions and be free to do what you want or work in better conditions and have better housing and be controlled by your boss?

  1. ummmmm.... That's a really hard decision. I really don't like being controlled but the small house living area Isn't an option for me. I'm going to need a second to think about this.

second taken- well I would be just live with the bad conditions because at least I'm still me and not who someone else wants me to be.

  2. I would rather work in better conditions and better housing and be controlled by my boss because that way I don't have to worry about money for food and trying to keep my family without eating. and i have all the space me and my family need for our self's.

  3. I think that i would rather work in better conditioins and be controlled by my boss. At that time people would've lived and worked for pullman because people lived way better in his town.

  4. If I had only one choice, I think I would rather be working for Pullman. It stinks that your life is controlled, but its better than working in life-threatining conditions. I mean, being controlled by your boss is paradise compared to the terrible working conditions. This is my reason to be controlled.

  6. I think I rather have nice working conditions and a house that is nicer than a cardboard box. Also I don't mind becoming controlled as long as I don't have disease or have nubs for arms and legs. I'm sure this is the right decision for some people and not just me.

  7. Then again Isn't It like your being controlled either way if you live In Pullman and he can control your life directly,Or you stay where you are and your standing still In life because the circumstances aren't allowing you to do anything for yourself.

  8. I would rather work in terrible conditions and be free to do what ever I wanted to do. Why would you want your life to be controlled? We all were born with a brain. Sure, If I choose to work in terrible conditions I would get ill or die, but if I were getting owned, or even bossed around then try to control my own life I would rather die happy. I mean do we really know if these workers were happy? All we know is that they were getting worked to death, but they had families. There had to be some happiness in their life.

  9. I would rather work in better conditions and have better housing and be controlled by my boss. I choose this one because I feel like it's not fair to the public who are buying this meat, which is making more money for my boss and end up eating nasty meat! And also I don't want to be hurting myself every day for who knows how long I would be working at that job. I don't like to be controlled, but when it's times like these I think I would choose the better option!

  12. Everyone-Why do you think Pullman made this housing? Was he protecting his workers? Or himself?

  15. Lupe-I love your comment about both controlling you. Tell me a little more. How would working in a meat packing factory be controlling your life?

  17. I think he made it to help himelf, because he knows that people would rather live in a better circumstance then living with random people! also it gives him more money$$$$

  18. Ms.Hughes-Working endless hours, or at least that's how you would feel. You'd be getting paid a majorly inefficient amount of money, that's not fair your housing would be horrible and your taking risks everyday for someone to make money off you without being treated with at least a little respect.

  21. I think Pullman made this because he knew people would want to have better working conditions and better housing. I think he was protecting himself, because I don't think any one would do that just out of the kindness of his heart, if some one does that they have a trick of some-sort to have people move in the houses and be taken advantage of. Also he's possibly the only one who's actually make the money and I don't even think he's actually paying the workers at all.

  22. Edbell- not necessarily money doesn't solve all your problems just the surface ones

  23. Hughes-He is just another boss like all the rest that owned a factory. I think he was doing this for himself. I mean he was bossing people around, but gave them something in return. To me he only gave them things in return for they wont talk back, or want to leave. Because if they did try to do this without them having the stuff that he gave them he wouldn't have something to throw in their faces. So without complaints comes reward.

  24. Ms.Hughes-I think that Pullman made this housing not only to protect himself, but his workers also. If you look at it, it makes sense why he did it in the first place. If he didn't make the housing people may have quit and people would be recieving bad credit about his company. The way he helped himself is that he provided them with such good lifestyle, that the workers would want to stay.
