Assignment #17: Starbucks with Obama

During her interview, Janell is asked what she would say if you she could talk to the president at the time. If you could sit down with President Obama and tell him one thing you think he needs to know about in order to change--what would it be? What is an issue you care deeply about that you would want to bring to his attention.

  1. If I was able to talk to Obama I would talk to him about the recent gang violence and that the streets are virtually unsafe in Chicago and you can literally walk out the door and get shot, like the eleven year old boy who just took out his dog with his father. Also i would talk about the muggings and also that's dangerous too.

  2. I would tell him that he needs to get all the gangs in jail so their could more safe neighborhoods in Chicago. and more kids can come outside to play with their families and friends.

  3. I would talk to President Obama about the schools and the teachers. I think this is a big issue because teachers are getting fired, and there aren't enough teachers to give children the education that they need. Kids are getting put in classes with almost 30 to maybe even 40 kids. I wonder if the president thinks that kids can actually get an education in a class like that. I know that when I'm in a class like that I feel like I can't get the help and education that I need. That's what I would talk to the president about.

  4. I were to talk to the president Obama I wouldn't really know what talk about... Wait actually I would talk about jobs. People now a days don't have any jobs to support their families. Some parents are out there selling drugs to do whatever they can to put more money on the table for their family.

  5. EdBell- I agree Chicago needs to be safe environment for all not just children.

  6. I agree. There's so many problems It's hard to choose one. Gang violence Is becoming A bigger and bigger Issue though so If anything I need to tell Obama that needs to change.Really getting gang's out of the street should be A major priority but being realistic getting them all In jail Isn't going to happen to easy. There Is always going to be someone who makes a bad choice.

  7. Ted-one element of persuasion that is particularly effective is giving a specific examples that tugs at our heartstrings or illicits emotion. What happened to this child?

  8. oh Im agreeing with EdBell and Ted

  9. Kanye west- Ell the reason why there is barely any jobs is because some are going out of business and some are laying people off in order to pay some of the workers evenly.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Kanye-Good point, the economic downturn has definitly impacted people's ability to get jobs. So what do you want him to do?

  11. I think I would tell the President is about the drugs that gang members be having because its a BIG thing, kid that are in high school they might get into drugs like weed. The kids could buy it off them and they would get into it and not pay any attention in school,it would just mess up their life.

  12. EdBell- Do you really think that the president can actually do that? look at how many gangs their are in the united states do you really think they can lock every gang up? will their be any space for all the inmates?

  13. EVERYONE-What should do about it???? You are telling him what you think is an issue, but you should also be thinking about the resolution. What will fix it?

  14. Ms.Hughes- A child who was male literally opened the door no older than eleven or twelve. He took out his dog and and was shot when a drive by happened. and he was also with his father.

  15. Kanye--I like that you are thinking about this lkogically and critically.

  16. Well I honestly have no idea how he would even come to get rid of gang violence but that's his decision to make he's the president that's why hes got the seat.

  17. i think i would talk about the drug crisis in this world and in the US. We as the people of the city of chicago have to tell all the drug users to GET OUT! of here and that is when the president Obama come in and is like git out a
get lot of more police men and stuff like that.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Ted- Oh my goodness. That is heartbreaking. It is also the kind of evidence that makes your argument strong! Good use of persuasive elements

  19. Derrick Rose-Isn't drug abuse A national problem though.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Stuff like that? Derrick are you really going to tell Obama to do "stuff like that" What kinds of stuff should he be doing? Would sending drug users out of the city solve the problem?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Well put Lupe, so are we kicking them out of the country? What about their families? Is treatment an option? Or do we just send them off.

    ReplyDelete
  22. kanye- yes or they could kill some of the people in the gang.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Lupe-The president isn't always the one that makes the choices. Their are people above him that have to approve or deny what he wants to change or do.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ms.Hughes- I think one thing to fix it is stricter laws so then civilians can live safe and don't have to worry about getting shot all the time. Just this year alone gang violence and muggings has sky-rocketed. So that's why I would ask him to have stricter laws so every one can be safe.

  25. Kevin-So, you say the drug use starts in high school. So what should be done to prevent drug use in high school? What should Rauner be doing?

    ReplyDelete
  26. lupe fiasco-yea it well be a big thing

    ReplyDelete
  27. Well like I said It.s up to him we can only present the problem he makes final decision's.I could never hold a spot like the presidency,I'm horrible at making decisions.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Lupe- Yes drug addition is a national problem so I think it should be dealt with harsh punishment. Just like the drug cartels in Mexico.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Ms. Hughes- no kid start using drug young

    ReplyDelete
  30. Drug use doesn't start In high school, the kids In high school had to learn that from somewhere right?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Ted-I appreciate the references to current events. One of the smartest professors (and people) I have had the pleasure to learn from told me that the newspaper would be my student's greatest weapon. I think he was right. The more you know about what's going on in the world around you, the better armed you will be to move into that world.

  32. Lupe- if your bad at making decisions then would you help your family if your family was on the verge of being homeless and you suddenly found a job and got money would you help your family? or just keep it?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Lupe and Derrick, do you think it starts younger?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Drugs come from anywhere not just from high school!!!! Kids start doing drugs even when there in grammar school!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yes, because when students start using drugs and they are going to tell their friends and more friends and so then gangs members are going to start coming into the area and I don't think you could stop it but you could get some students to stop.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Ms.Hughes- I appreciate the compliment, thank you.

  37. If I were to choose one thing to talk about with the President it would be about law enforcement. I look watch the news and it seems that the violence is getting worse. I mean yeah the newly elected mayor's are putting more police officers on duty, but they are not putting enough on duty. One issue or reason that I can support my subject is what has been happening in Chicago,IL. Recently there have been alot of what are called "flash mobs". Even though more officers are on the streets it still seems to happen at the same pace. I urge the President to try and do something about Law Enfforcement.

  38. I'd help my family of course that's not the type of decisions I'm talking about. National decisions that affect everyone around me are more what I'm afraid of. even in relationships I mess up pretty bad.

  39. If I were to talk to Obama I would address two topics. Which are the amount of violence and abortion there is in the world. There would always be violence around us, it won't go anywhere soon, but we can decrease the amount of violence. People complain that their children have to be scared for their lives, but when you like at who says it, they themselves grew up in that environment as well. Sure, they probably don't want their kids to live in the same environment that they did, but at the same time being aware of your surroundings and knowing how to live life can make you stronger because of the violence. Maybe what Obama can do is somehow show kids/teenagers that there is ways out from what they are supposed to be. They can have a better life. We all were born with equal rights; it’s just up to us to use them in a good way. Now as for abortion every young teenager believes it’s the way out, but it honestly isn't. Anything can go wrong during the abortion; the tools that they use may not even be cleaned. Girls could turn the corner and find a stranger that is offering to attempt an abortion. It’s so easy to have one because of the mind set of these girls. They think if they have a child they would lose everything, but they won't. It’s up to them if they let it affect them. Why kill a child for your mistakes? Girls just don't know people, who have had a baby and didn't make it, but I do, it’s my mom. There is a not down of having a baby, it’s yourself that is putting yourself down. What Mr. Obama can do is find girls who have made it and let them share their story. Sometimes one word can touch a million of people.
